Apple Peeler, Corer, Slicer….but mostly a good idea

IMG_2303

I’m originally from Michigan.  We have apples and cinnamon in our blood stream up there.  Growing up, Apple Crisp was one of my favorites desserts.  I, of course, started making Crisps and Pies when I was out and on my own too.  It didn’t matter if it was an Apple Pie or a Crisp the worst part was peeling all those apple!  When I unpacked my first kitchen gadget in the mid 80′s I was fairly new to the Kitchen […]

The Blogger / “Brand Ambassador” Phenomena

images

I do almost all of my reading online…There’s a notification on my iPad whenever anything in the world happens that might be newsworthy…and sometimes even when it’s not particularly newsworthy.  By the time I turn on the evening news, it’s usually just background noise at that time, because I’ve already heard about it online.  My favorite and trusted sources for information is much different than my husbands.  Trusted sources are SO personal aren’t they? I used to collect cookbooks, but […]

Naked On The Internet: Etiquette – Part 2

file00031162305

Remember I’m not really naked on the internet, but a lot of people are either literally or figuratively with the things they post, tweet, etc. and I want to reiterate:  they are SOCIAL media, not vent-like-a-fishwife-media, so why don’t more people get it? And what are the few rules of etiquette we should expect? You may recall that I look at social media as a metaphoric cocktail party and the same etiquette used there applies to social networks and communicating […]

The Art of the Question

JetHawks_4_17_013

The Art of Conversation lies within the questions we ask. A good conversation is something like a game of catch. One person throws an idea or comment to the other, and he or she then tosses it back.  If that second person doesn’t return the ball, or doesn’t return the ball well, the game ends. Both players feel awkward and wish they could be somewhere else. Without questions in our conversation, we become twitter talkers….proliferators.  Not listeners, not interested in […]

Naked On the Internet: The end of Etiquette?

file531261244207

OK, so I’m not really naked on the internet. But a lot of people are. Whether naked comes literally when an ex posts intimate pictures after your breakup, or figuratively, when every personal life detail and opinion is expressed in a social medium. Which brings me to the crux of the issue: they are SOCIAL media, not vent-like-a-fishwife-media, so why don’t more people get it? I look at social media as a metaphoric cocktail party. Would you walk in naked? […]

Resolves for the new year…but not New Year Resolutions!

I prefer staying in on New Years Eve.  Just like St. Patrick Day, there’s too many people out just to see how drunk they can get.   I always say, I’ve spent more New Year Eve’s in bed with Dick Clark than any other man.  These days New Years Eve is hunting for the best movie marathon and eating the best “crap” food I can imagine.  Delightful.  Dick Clark is gone and it’s now just my husband and I in […]

The Make Believe World of Social Media

Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, texts, et al, are great tools. They are also a crutch that fosters: the ability for people to create a false self to present to the world passive aggressive behaviors a belief that a large number of friends/followers defines the quality of relationships a belief that people really want to know what you’re doing every moment of your day a complete and utter lack of personal creativity False Selves It amazes me how many people will not […]

My Love/Hate Relationship

I love technology. Technology untethers us from our desks and gives us a sense of freedom. I can write with my butt plunked on the sofa. I can look out the window and admire the yellows, burning flame oranges, and bright scarlets of maple trees turing color. I can see the deer run past, the squirrels on the deck teasing my dog, and watch the cardinals dart back and forth in the woods as I appreciate the extra hour the […]

Fifty Shades of….

Alright, I’ve read the trilogy….  This steamy novel trilogy focuses on 22-year-old recent college grad Anastasia Steele, who enters into a dominant/submissive sexual relationship with a billionaire named Christian Grey. I must admit to being a little bit tantalized!  But then I got into the characters, I thought I’d see a resolution to the “Fifty Shades of Fucked up”.   I truly needed to see a reason and a resolution come from these characters.  I found it difficult to accept Christian and especially […]

School Shootings….the root cause

I just came in from a beautiful walk on a bright snow covered sunny day.  The wind was minimal, I was more than warm in my big down coat and our three dogs were playing like their life depended on it. When I came in and showered and sat down on the bed to dry my hair I turned on the TV and was greeted by one of those “Special Reports”, you know when you hear the incoming music or […]
